En plein air easel

René Fielder

By way of introduction, my name is René Fielder. I’m a Holt student in the Pineville studio taking intermediate oil painting classes. After taking a plein air workshop with Nicholas Stewart, I decided I wanted to make painting outdoors a regular part of my art practice. I looked at the easels available on the market and didn’t see what I wanted at a price point I could afford so I started by making my own, with the help of my brother and his workshop. That started a two year journey through several iterations and working with a local engineer to produce a 3D-printed version of my own design.

The PAK (plein air kit) easel weighs just 2.5 lbs. and is about the size of a standard laptop. It can be used with most standard camera tripods and features a two-piece design that separates the painting surface from the 9×12″ mixing area. This allows your painting panel to sit comfortably at eye level while your palette remains at a natural arm height for easier color mixing. There is also in integrated, reversible tray with brush holders and extra workspace. You can paint with oils, acrylics, or watercolors. Lastly, if you’re painting an 8×10″ panel or smaller, there is a built in wet panel holder so you can transport your painting safely without needing a separate carrier.
